Three Republican incumbents in the Monmouth County-based 13th legislative district – State Sen. Declan O’Scanlon (R-Little Silver), Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (R-Middletown), and Assemblywoman Vicky Flynn (R-Holmdel) – have won re-election, the New Jersey Globe projects.
As of 9:06 p.m. and with 93% of election districts reporting, O’Scanlon leads Democratic challenger Lucille Lo Sapio 59%-40%; Scharfenberger and Flynn have a combined 58% of the vote against Democrats Paul Eschelbach and Danielle Mastropiero.
All three Republican incumbents were first elected to their current offices within the last few cycles. O’Scanlon, a former assemblyman, won the 2017 race to succeed State Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-Middletown); Scharfenberger was elected in 2019 after Assemblywoman Amy Handlin (R-Middletown) retired; and Flynn defeated Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso (R-Holmdel) in the 2021 Republican primary after DiMaso lost the support of the Monmouth GOP.
Among other things, their victory means that Gov. Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy, who are Middletown residents, will continue to be represented by Republicans in the statehouse.
