A new super PAC, Prosperity Rising NJ, formed to boost the chances of legislative candidates in the 2023 midterm elections, is allied with Senate President Nicholas Scutari.
The new group will be run by Doug Heyl, a veteran political strategist who managed Jim McGreevey’s nearly-successful upset against Christine Todd Whitman in the 1997 New Jersey governor’s race.
Scutari allies have also forced Moving NJ Together, a non-profit 501 (c)4 organization.
Ray Ferrioli, a top Democratic fundraiser, is also associated with the two organizations. The filing with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission shows the PAC address to be Ferrioli’s office in Paramus.
The ELEC filing indicates an intent to spend $500,000, although that number is a non-binding estimate.
Scutari is looking to defend several incumbents in competitive races – Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch), Joseph Lagana (D-Paramus), and Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) — and possibly pick up a few seats.
The McGreevey ‘97 race, Heyl ran won a hotly-contested Democratic primary against Rep. Rob Andrews (D-Bellmawr) and former Morris County Prosecutor Michael Murphy by two percentage points and then came within one point of unseating Whitman.
Heyl was the Southern Political Director of Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign that outed incumbent George Bush, and has won races in 24 states.
