Matsikoudis wins GOP Assembly nod in 21st district

Michele  Matsikoudis won the endorsement of the Union County Republican organization for an open State Assembly seat on Saturday, defeating Steve Spurr on the second ballot.

Matsikoudis, a New Providence councilwoman, defeated Spurr by a vote of 158 to 85, a 65%-3% margin.

The two incumbents, Jon Bramnick and Nancy Munoz, endorsed Matsikoudis during the 2nd ballot voting.

Spurr, the 34-year-old Summit GOP Municipal Chairman, had narrowly led on the first ballot, 82-79, a 44%-42% margin in a six candidate race.

It appears that Matsikoudis picked up the bulk of votes initially cast for Cranford Township Committeewoman Mary O’Connor and Mountainside Councilman Rene Dierkes.

She will run on the GOP organization line with Bramnick for Senate and Munoz, who is seeking re-election to the Assembly.   Republicans in Somerset and Morris are expected to affirm the vote in Union County.

Union County Democrats will pick their candidates today.

If Matsikoudis wins, she would be the first legislator from New Providence since Assemblyman Bob Franks resigned to take his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
