Madison mayor endorses Dawkins

Madison mayor Robert Conley has endorsed attorney Cliff Dawkins for the Democratic nomination for State Senate in the 25th district.

Conley is well-respected in Morris Democratic circles, but Madison is in the next-door 27th district.

“It really says something about how far the Democratic party has come in this area that we now have a contested primary in the 25th District,” Conley said. “That being said, I have given this matter some considerable thought, and given the context of this election, I think that Cliff would be the best candidate for the party to endorse for the nomination.”

Dawkins faces former Morris Township mayor Jeff Grayzel and Rupande Mehta, a former freeholder candidate, at the March 15 Democratic convention.

All three candidates have pledged to back the winner of the convention to run against State Sen. Anthony M. Bucco (R-Boonton) in a November special election for the fourteen-month unexpired term.

Bucco’s father, State Sen. Anthony R. Bucco (R-Boonton), held the seat from 1998 until his death last September.
