State Sens. James Holzapfel (R-Toms River) and Robert Singer (R-Lakewood) aren’t ready to back former Burlington County Freeholder Kate Gibbs for New Jersey’s 3rd district congressional seat against freshman Rep. Andy Kim (D-Marlton).

“I don’t know yet. I have to wait and see what Ocean County has to say about the whole thing,” Singer said. “I still represent Ocean County, and I certainly would wait to hear what the Ocean County chairman has to say.”

Gibbs, who lost her freeholder seat last year, received the backing of Assemblyman Ryan Peters (R-Hainesport) last week. Burlington County Republican Chairman Sean Earlen endorsed Gibbs for the congressional nod in July.  She has not yet announced her candidacy.

Gibbs, who works for the Operating Engineers union, is considered the frontrunner, but that designation might not extend past Burlington County.

“I don’t even know who that is. I’m a Republican,” Holzapfel said. “It’s too early. I don’t know who else is running, but obviously, it’s not a news story, whoever the Republican is, I would back them against him.”
