Garfield Democrats have endorsed three organization-backed candidates for the legislature, eschewing a favorite son candidate running on a slate with gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop.
The endorsement of State Sen. Benjie Wimberly (D-Paterson), Assemblyman Al Abdelaziz (D-Paterson), and Orlando Cruz, a Passaic County commissioner seeking an open Assembly seat in the 35th legislative district, comes from the Garfield Democratic County Committee, along with Mayor Everett Garnto, Jr. and the four members of the city council.
Romi Herrera, a former Garfield council, is seeking an Assembly seat on Fulop’s ticket.
“We have had the opportunity to get to know the candidates, and it’s clear that Assemblyman Abdelaziz and Commissioner Cruz are the best people for the job –hardworking, dedicated public servants who demonstrate every day a true commitment to fighting for the people they represent,” the Garfield Democrats said. “From tackling affordability to investing in our schools and infrastructure, and creating jobs and opportunities, they will focus on building a strong, secure future for everyone in our communities.”
Newark Corporation Counsel Kenyatta Stewart is also expected to join the Assembly race.
Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson) is not seeking re-election to an eighth term.
Wimberly has no announced opposition in the Democratic primary.
