Morris County Sheriff Jim Gannon endorsed Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce (R-Parsippany-Troy Hills) Monday in a break with the county Republican organization.
“I stand by my friends, and BettyLou is a friend,” Gannon said. “More than that, though, she is a fierce advocate for Morris County families, retirees, and business owners. We are fortunate to have her representing us in the State Assembly and she has earned re-election.”
In a narrow vote at last month’s nominating convention, the Morris County Republican Committee awarded its line to Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) and former Pompton Lakes Councilman Christian Barranco.
DeCroce has the organization line in Passaic and Essex . Morris accounts for roughly 78% of the district’s Republican primary votes.
An endorsement from Gannon, a two-term sheriff, could help bridge the gap for DeCroce ahead of June 8, especially if it signals divisions among Morris Republicans, who awarded organizational lines for the first time this year.
“I’ve watched BettyLou knock on doors, stuff envelopes, and raise money for local candidates to help them win tough elections,” Gannon said. “She was there for me when I first ran, and I’ve seen her lend a hand to fellow Republicans when it mattered most. We need more people like that in our party, not less. I am proud to stand with BettyLou.”
