Assemblywoman Joann Downey isn’t ready to endorse anyone for the Democratic nod to take on Rep. Chris Smith next year.
“[I’m] not specifically backing anyone right now. I like them all. I think they’re all wonderful women. I’m really impressed,” Downey said. “I’m proud there’s so many who really want to run against Chris Smith. I really think it’s great and more power to all of them. Let’s see how it works out, get to know all of them, and let’s see what happens.”
So far, three candidates — former State Department foreign services officer Stephanie Schmid, former journalist David Applefield and lobbyist Tiffany Kaszuba — have announced bids against Smith.
Kaszuba has phone banked for Downey and her running mate, Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling.
“I’m not ready to completely endorse anybody, but I’m saying ‘keep going’ to all of them,” Downey said. “They’re doing a great job.”
