Bateman won’t block Christodoulou’s nomination

Somerset Dem vice chair up for spot on housing agency board

State Sen. Kip Bateman said he’s signed off on Somerset County Democratic Vice Chair Zenon Christodoulou’s nomination to the state Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency board.

“Yes, I have,” he said. “They recommended some new people to the tax board, and I reviewed their credentials and I signed off on them.”

Bateman could have indefinitely blocked Christodoulou’s nomination using senatorial courtesy.

The vice chairman flirted with a run against Bateman in the past, and mulled a bid against Somerset County Freeholder Pat Walsh last year, though he eventually decided not to challenge.

Walsh was ousted by Somerset County Freeholder Melonie Marano in 2019.

Bateman said he did not ask Christodoulou whether he would run for Senate in 2021 or attempt to secure a commitment that he not do so.

“I don’t ask that question,” Bateman said. “The county chair submitted resumes to me, and I know him, but I would never ask that question.”
