Assembly candidate sued for missing rent payment, late fees

A former Atlantic City councilman running for State Assembly is being sued for not paying his rent, court records show.

S. Inlet Partners Urban Renewal alleges that Bruce Weekes owes over $2,300 in unpaid rent for his Atlantic Avenue apartment.

Weekes is scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge James McClain on March 28.

Earlier this year, Mariner Finance won a $6,802 judgment against Weekes for failing to repay a loan.  In 2019, Bank of America successfully sued Weekes for failing to pay $4,587 he owed them.

Weekes is seeking an Assembly seat in the 2nd legislative district on a slate headed by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop.  Fulop is standing behind Weekes.

“We don’t believe that financial hardship should be a reason to stop someone from running for office, and time will tell what the courts rule in these cases once the public has access to the full backstory,” the Fulop campaign told the New Jersey Globe.  “We fully expect opposition research stories to be dumped on many of the legislative candidates we support because the institutional candidates don’t want primaries and are scared. The truth is Bruce Weekes was elected as the council president in Atlantic City and remains tremendously popular in the area.”

Weekes did not immediately respond to a message left on his cell phone.
