Armato won’t challenge Brown in ’21

By Nikita Biryukov, March 07 2019 3:22 pm

Assemblyman John Armato does not intend to challenge Sen. Chris Brown in 2021.

“Yes,” Armato said when asked if he had ruled out running for his district’s Senate seat. “I haven’t got done what I want to do here.”

The second legislative district is one of only two in the state with split representation. Both the districts Assembly seats are held by Democrats, one by Armato and the other by Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo.

Before 2017, Democrats held the district’s Senate seat as well, but Brown, then an assemblyman, beat out now-former Sen. Colin Bell, earning a rare Senate pickup for the New Jersey GOP.

Bell was appointed to fill the remainder of late Sen. Jim Whelan’s term after the latter’s death that same year.
