A group of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union locals endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor on Monday.
The UFCW Locals 152, 312, 360, 464A, 888, and 1262, which represent more than 66,000 workers in New Jersey, said the Democrat is best prepared to support the state’s unions and working people.
“Mikie Sherrill has always stood with working people,” Sam Ferraino, the president of UFCW Local 360, said in a release. “She listens, she shows up, and she fights for the issues that matter to our members—good jobs, fair wages, and the right to organize. We’re proud to support her because we know she has our back.”
Several of these unions supported former state Senate President Steve Sweeney for governor in 2023. Sweeney finished last in June’s six-candidate primary. One of the Locals, UFCW Local 360, endorsed former Gov. Jim McGreevey to be mayor of Jersey City in March.
“I have firsthand experience of the political skills and leadership of Mikie, having lived in the 11th district of Morris County for over 20 years – a ruby red district that she was able to flip blue in 2018 after the retirement of 12-term Republican Congressman Frelinghuysen,” said Max Bruny, the president of UFCW Local 888. “She is the fighter New Jersey needs during these challenging times. On behalf of UFCW Local 888, I wholeheartedly endorse Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill as our next governor.”
