Acting Attorney General Andrew Bruck announced today that a detective with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office has been indicted for an unauthorized investigation he allegedly conducted into a vehicle crash that involved a family member.
In December 2019, a relative of Detective Sgt. Robert Harkins Jr. was involved in a minor car accident in a Middle Township parking lot. Following the accident, Harkins allegedly used his position to identify the driver of the other vehicle, issuing a subpoena to the store where the accident occurred and sending information requests to state agencies “without approval, permission or lawful authority.”
Harkins faces three charges: official misconduct, tampering with public records or information, and falsifying or tampering with records.
