Floyd Vivino, known to generations of television viewers and radio listeners as Uncle Floyd and a quintessential New Jerseyan, died yesterday after a long illness. He was 74.
Vivino’s show aired on PBS in the New York media market from 1974 to 1998. The show went into a small syndication circuit in the 1980s, bringing him to Boston, Chicago, Hartford, and Philadelphia.
In 2009, Vivino briefly entered New Jersey politics, announcing that he would run for governor as a write-in candidate against incumbent Jon Corzine and his Republican challenger, Chris Christie.
“All politicians are jokes. The people of New Jersey deserve a pro,” he said at the time. “Make Uncle Floyd the next Governor of New Jersey.”
He ran again as a write-in in 2017.
He was a native of Paterson.
