Statements on Death of Babs Siperstein

By David Wildstein, February 04 2019 9:32 am

ASSEMBLYWOMAN VALERIE VAINIERI HUTTLE
“I will always remember her as a tenacious fighter for equality, she gave voice to so many who felt they were voiceless and reminded us how one person can change the world with a little push . I think one of her proudest moments was last May when she pressed the green button at my desk on the Assembly floor to vote Yes for  the birth certificate bill named after her. Although her health was failing she had the strength to continue pursuing the legislation until becoming law. Always smiling, I know the signings of the package of LGBTQ bills gave her not only a sense of pride but final accomplishments before she died. Her story and her advocacy will be remembered not only in the State House but in New Jersey.”

DEMOCRATIC STATE CHAIRMAN JOHN CURRIE
“Barbra ‘Babs’ Casbar Siperstein leaves behind an inspiring legacy of activism and she will be remembered as a true trailblazer who changed our state for the better. I’m proud of the role Babs played not just as an advocate on the issues she fought so hard on, but in our party as a Deputy Vice Chair of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. Babs will be deeply missed but her legacy as a change maker will live on forever.”

DEMOCRATIC STATE VICE CHAIR LIZETTE DELGADO-POLANCO
“Anyone who believes in equality and progress in New Jersey owes a great debt of gratitude to Babs Siperstein, who spent her life advocating for these important values. We must honor her legacy and her work by continuing to move the conversation on equality forward and ensure that every New Jersey resident has the opportunities and rights they deserve.”

GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY
“Tammy and I are saddened by the loss of Babs Siperstein. She was a tremendous, passionate advocate for NJ’s LGBTQ community, and a dear friend. Just last week, the Babs Siperstein Law took effect. Thanks to her, birth certificates will more fully represent gender identity.”

TRENTON MAYOR REED GUSCIORA
“Babs Siperstein was one of the most influential advocates for the LGBTQ community and an important voice in the Democratic Party for trans rights. I take comfort in knowing her legacy lives on in the lives of countless people whose destinies she changed for the better.”

ASSEMBLYMAN NICHOLAS CHIARAVALLOTI
“Babs Siperstein was a leader and national model for the LGBTQ community. She was at the forefront of a movement that ensured diversity and inclusion, as well as challenged injustices. She was also a friend for nearly 20 years. As with thousands of others who she met and influenced, her experience shaped and developed my understanding and my determination to secure civil rights for the community. Her toughness and dedication was an inspiration.”

MIDDLESEX COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CHAIRMAN KEVIN MCCABE
“Laurie and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Siperstein family, and Babs’ extended family across the nation.  She was an unwavering force as an activist for the LGBT community and as a successful businesswoman in New Jersey. We are sad that she will no longer be with us, but her memory will live on and change the lives of so many children with the passing of the Babs Siperstein Law. I am glad she was able to see it enacted last week.”

MIDDLESEX COUNTY DEMOCRATIC VICE CHAIR BEATRICE MOSCOWITZ
“I’ve known Babs for over 50 years, and her dinner table grew larger every year I knew her.  Her home was always open each holiday for men and women who may not have been able to go home to their families, and the heartfelt discussions around the dinner table left you wanting to live your truest self.”

SENATE PRESIDENT STEVE SWEENEY
“We all mourn the loss of Babs Siperstein. She was a courageous pioneer in the fight for gender equality who pursued the cause of justice with dignity and compassion. She advanced the cause of equal rights, helping to shape new laws and to transform the attitudes of others. My condolences to her family and her countless friends who loved and admired her. She will be missed, but the legacy of her accomplishments will be with us forever.”

SENATE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE TERESA RUIZ
“Babs Siperstein was a powerful force for change in the State of New Jersey and around the country. She fought for our most marginalized groups and refused to accept the status quo of our time. It was an honor to know her and call her a friend, and it is a privilege to have had her represent our state in the national fight for LGBTQ rights. She will be sorely missed but her legacy will continue to propel us forward as we seek greater acceptance and equality for all.”

SENATOR JOSEPH VITALE, ASSEMBLY SPEAKER CRAIG COUGHLIN & ASSEMBLYWOMAN YVONNE LOPEZ
