Joseph Martin, former Essex County administrator, Union County manager, dies

Joseph A. Martin, Jr., who served as the Essex County Administrator and as the Union County manager, died on December 27.  He was 73.

Essex County Executive Peter Shapiro first appointed Martin as county administrator in 1985.  He was replaced in that post in 1987 after Republican Nicholas Amato was elected. He became the Union County Manager in 1988 following the resignation of Donald Anderson.

He later returned to the post to serve as Essex County Administrator under Joseph DiVincenzo.

From 1994 to 2003, Martin served on the Caldwell/West Caldwell Board of Education.

Martin also headed waterfront development for New Jersey Transit and was the Verona Township Manager.    He was a budget consultant for the Passaic County Board of Freeholders.

He served Vietnam and spent 28 years as a U.S. Army reservist.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 PM today at the Codey & Jones Funeral Home in Caldwell, followed by a service at 11 AM on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell.
