Irving Callender, a Newark police officer and former aide to Mayor Sharpe James, died of complications of COVID-19 on August 22.  He was 43.  Callender worked for James from 1998 until becoming a police officer in 2005.

Ray Regalado, a retired Jersey City police detective who was active in local politics, died on August 29 after a month-long battle with the coronavirus.  Regalado was a police officer from 1995 until his retirement earlier this year.  He ran for Jersey City Council in 2013 and for the State Assembly in 2015.

Phyllis DeSerio Ellafrits, who worked as a law secretary to Walter Jones when he was the New Jersey Senate President and Bergen County Republican Chairman in the early 1960s, died on August 22.  She was 88.

Robert Rauen, who served as a Highlands councilman from 1993 to 2000, died on August 29.  He was 60.

Ruth Cook, a former Brick Planning Board member, died on August 30.  She was 93.

Agnes Gallagher, who worked for several Superior Court Judges in Bergen County, died on August 31.  She was 86.
