Jason Balmir, the brother of former Hudson County Freeholder Gerry Balmir, has died.
Peter Lederman, a former Science Advisory Board member for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, died on June 9. He was 88. Lederman was born in Germany, where his father lost his job when Jews were banned from holding government posts, and escaped to the U.S. after Kristallnacht. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His widow, Susan Lederman, served as national and state president of the League of Women Voters and as a member of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.
Joan Callahan, a former sports editor for The Shopper and News Beacon until those newspapers were acquired by the North Jersey Medica Group, died on June 11. She was 89. Callahan volunteered as a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee following her appointment by the Family Division of the New Jersey Superior Court.
Jeanne Wenzel, a former Republican county committeewoman in Lavallette, died on June 8. She was 77.
Rebecca Ehrlich, a leading mental health advocate, died on June 4. She was 47. Ehrlich founded Taking Strides Against Mental Illness, which was co-chaired by former Gov. Richard Codey, former First Lady Mary Jo Codey, and Rep. Bill Pascrell.
