Ethel Graves, the former First Lady of Paterson, passed away on May 23. She was 88.
She was working as a U.S. Army nurse in Europe during World War II when she met Frank X. Graves, a soldier who was recovering from shrapnel wounds. They married after returning home.
Frank Graves was first elected mayor in 1961 and served until 1966. He was elected to the City Council in 1974 and served as council president from 1974 to 1978. He was elected to the State Senate in 1977, and became mayor again in 1982. He served as both mayor and senator until his death of a heart attack in 1990, at age 66. Bill Pascrell replaced him as mayor and John Girgenti as state senator.
Ethel Graves is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Conte Funeral Home in Elmwood Park on May 29 at 10 AM.
