After serving three months in the United States Senate, George Helmy will go back to his previous position as executive vice president, chief external affairs and policy officer at RWJBarnabas Health on Monday, according to a report from ROI-NJ.

Today, Helmy will return to his post as a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  He had taken a leave of absence after Gov. Phil Murphy announced his appointment of Helmy, his former chief of staff, to fill the vacancy created when Robert Menendez resigned after his criminal conviction.

“I want to commend Sen. George Helmy on his distinguished service in the U.S. Senate on behalf of the people of the great state of New Jersey,” said RWJBarnabas Health CEO Mark Manigan.  “He has built a remarkable legacy of service and accomplishment to our state and nation for which we can all be proud. Senator Helmy will continue to provide our team with invaluable leadership and counsel in helping RWJBarnabas Health achieve its mission of building and sustaining a healthier New Jersey.”

Helmy told ROI-NJ that connections he made with his fellow senators, particularly those involved in Health-related issues, would help him as he returns to his RWJBarnabas Health post

“The role allows me still to have a great intersection with government officials and public policy,” he said to ROI-NJ. “Going back there after this short term in this in the Senate was a no-brainer for me.”

Helmy is the third Port Authority Commissioner from New Jersey to serve in the U.S. Senate, along with Arthur Walsh and Frank Lautenberg.   Rep. Robert J. Menendez (D-Jersey City) is also a former Port Authority Commissioner.
