The Port Authority Policemen’s Benevolent Association, representing more than 1,500 officers of the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), today endorsed Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) for re-election to the 5th congressional district.
Gottheimer’s Bergen County-based district is home to many of the officers of the PAPD, so the endorsement could carry some weight. The congressman had previously gotten the backing of New Jersey’s two main police unions, the Policemen’s Benevolent Association and the Fraternal Order of Police, making him the lone candidate in the state to get both unions’ endorsement.
The Republican nominee in the 5th district, former investment banker and 2020 candidate Frank Pallotta, has struggled to remain competitive with Gottheimer. Gottheimer’s ads have cast himself as a pro-police congressman in contrast with Pallotta, who has said favorable things about the far-right militia group Oath Keepers.
