Gottheimer touts police support, slams Pallotta’s Oath Keeper comments in TV ad

‘Police in New Jersey say no to extremist Frank Pallotta,’ ad says

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) released a new TV ad this morning that casts him as a pro-law enforcement congressman and attacks his Republican opponent, Frank Pallotta, as an extremist who stands with fringe groups.

Script: (Narrator): “Police in New Jersey say no to extremist Frank Pallotta. No wonder. Pallotta defended the radical Oath Keepers, who attacked and killed police.”
(Pallotta): “I stand by them. They’re good people.”
(Narrator): “And Pallotta would weaken gun and school safety laws. Josh Gottheimer wrote and passed the bipartisan Invest to Protect Act to hire and train police. Working to fight crime, Gottheimer is endorsed by our state and local police.”

In 2020, when he was running for the first time against Gottheimer, Pallotta refused to condemn the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia group that was later involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Gottheimer quickly made the comments a centerpiece of his campaign, which he ultimately won by a 53-46% margin.

Gottheimer has gotten endorsements this cycle from the state’s two major police unions, the Policemen’s Benevolent Association and the Fraternal Order of Police, both of which have shown a willingness to back Republicans in other races.

The ad released today is Gottheimer’s third so far this election cycle. The congressman’s first spot focused on the congressman’s bipartisan record, while his second spot was similar to the one released today, hitting Pallotta on the Oath Keepers and his stance on abortion.

This year’s Gottheimer vs. Pallotta contest is not considered to be a top-tier race, partially because of the lean of the redrawn 5th congressional district – it would have supported Joe Biden by 12 points in 2020 – and partially because of Pallotta’s shoestring campaign. Eschewing the self-funding he brought to the 2020 race, Pallotta has been financially lapped many times over by Gottheimer, and he has yet to air any TV advertisements.
