Gottheimer offers Sussex commissioner a briefing on Oath Keepers

Congressman: ‘Extremists present a clear and present danger to New Jersey families’

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) has invited members of the Sussex County Board of Commissioners to join him at a briefing on white supremacist hate groups by the state Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness.

The invitation comes one day after federal prosecutors alleged that the Oath Keepers, an anti-government militia group with a chapter in Sussex County, participated in a conspiracy to storm the U.S. Capitol and prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.

“This past year, for the first time ever, the NJOHSP raised the threat level posed by white supremacists to ‘high,’ joining homegrown, ISIS-inspired terrorists as the most persistent hostile actors in New Jersey,” Gottheimer said in a letter to the Sussex commissioners.

Gottheimer, who joined the House Homeland Security Committee this year, said that there is a “significant uptick in threats from domestic violent extremists, including here in Northern New Jersey.”

“It is imperative that we form a united front and send a clear message that all forms of hatred, extremism, and violence promoted by any organization —  including whether that is ISIS inspired terrorists, the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters, or by individuals inspired by antifa ideology —  will not be tolerated here in New Jersey or in the United States,” Gottheimer said.

According to Gottheimer, some of these groups active in Sussex County.

“Extremists present a clear and present danger to New Jersey families,” Gottheimer said in a letter to the Sussex commissioners.

In his 2020 re-election campaign, the three-term Democratic congressman slammed his GOP opponent, Frank Pallotta, for refusing to denounce the Oath Keepers.

Gottheimer will discuss the Oath Keepers and other issues in an appearance on the New Jersey Globe Power Hour on Talk Radio 77 WABC on Saturday at 4 PM.
