Over 250 past and present local elected and party officials from Camden and Gloucester County have endorsed former Senate President Steve Sweeny for the Democratic, including former Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts and Assemblywoman-elect Melinda Kane (D-Cherry Hill).
The entire Democratic legislative delegation from the two counties announced their support of Sweeney more than a year ago.
Endorsements came from all Democratic county commissioners in the two counties: Louis Cappelli, Jr., Edward McDonnell, Jeffrey Nash, Ginny Betteridge, Al Dyer, Jonathan Young, and Kane of Camden; and Frank DiMarco, Denice DiCarlo, Matthew Weng, Joann Gattinelli, and Jim Jefferson in Gloucester. Sweeney also has the backing of two sheriffs — Chuck Billingham of Camden and Carmel Morina of Gloucester – and Gloucester County Clerk James Hogan. Two Camden officials who didn’t seek re-election last year, former County Clerk Joseph Ripa and former Sheriff Whip Wilson, are also with Sweeney; Ripa’s successor, Pamela Lampitt, endorsed Sweeney in 2023.
Thirty-seven mayors are backing Sweeney for governor: Robert Jakubowski, Audubon Borough; Kyle Hanson, Barrington; Chuck Sauter, Bellmawr, Phyllis Magazzu, Berlin Township; Dave Fleisher, Cherry Hill; Jamila Odon, Chesilhurst; Thomas Weaver, Clementon; Dayl Baile, Gloucester City; David Mayer, Gloucester Township; Colleen Bianco-Bezich, Haddonfield; Zach Houck, Haddon Heights; Randy Teague, Haddon Township; Thomas Barbera, Laurel Springs; Richard Roach, Lindenwold; Beth Ann Cowling-Carson, Magnolia; Ted Brennan, Merchantville; Sue Carney, Mt. Ephraim; Greg Brandley, Oaklyn; Nikki Roberts, Pennsauken; Christopher Green, Pine Hill; Nick Kappatos, Runnemede; Linda Hall, Stratford; Michael Mignona, Voorhees; Marie Lawrence, Winslow; Joseph Chukwouke, Woodlynne; Tom Bianco, Clayton, Paul Medany, Deptford; John Wallace III, Glassboro; Vincent Giovannitti, Greenwich; Greg Wolfe, Monroe; Robert Zimmerman, Mantua; Dennis Burke, National Park; John Giovannitti, Paulsboro; Tom Fromm, Swedesboro; Joe Mehaffey, West Deptford; Fritz Sims, Jr., Westville; Kyle Miller, Woodbury; and Natalia Matthias, Woolwich.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming support our campaign has received from these incredible leaders,” said Sweeney. “As New Jersey’s next Governor, my sole focus will be to improve the lives of working people by making our state more affordable, safer, and protecting our core values.”
Other Sweeney endorsements include two former Camden County Democratic chairmen – Joseph Borreggine and David Luthmen – and Democratic State Committee members Steve Ayscue, Karin Elkis, Meryl Greene, Harry Platt, Shawn Layton, and Lisa Cerny.
