New Sweeney ad touts roots as an ironworker

Democratic gubernatorial candidate says he wants to ‘look out for people who work with their hands’

Former Senate President Steve Sweeney touts his background as a second-generation ironworker, working with his hands, in a new ad that’s part of a seven-figure buy as he seeks the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey.

In “Hands,” Sweeney pledges to help working class New Jerseyans get their fair share and reminds voters that he helped increase the minimum wage and pass a senior citizen tax cut.

“Trenton has plenty of lawyers,” Sweeney said.  “I’m running for governor to look out for people who work with their hands.”

One-third of the Democratic candidates seeking to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy are lawyers.

Script: (Narrator) New Jersey’s strength comes from people who work with their hands. This is Steve Sweeney. His father was an ironworker, so he was an ironworker – using his hands to work on bridges like this one. Sweeney ran for office to help working people get our fair share, used his power to raise the minimum wage, and cut taxes for seniors. (Ironworker) Steve, just keep fighting for us, okay? (Sweeney) Trenton has plenty of lawyers.  I’m running for governor to look out for people who work with their hands.”
