Mercer County Republicans will award their organization slogan to three gubernatorial candidates – Bill Spadea, Jack Ciattarelli, and Jon Bramnick – after the GOP convention tonight.
Spadea outpolled Ciattarelli, 69-59, with 33 votes cast for Bramnick. He and State Sen. Edward Durr did not compete in Mercer, which makes his first-place finish even more impressive.
In a non-binding vote in advance of a convention that no longer awards a county line, the Bergen County Republican Policy Committee recommended Ciattarelli for governor, 48-11, against former Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario Kranjac. One vote went to Monica Brinson.
Spadea, Bramnick, and Durr did not take part in the Bergen process.
In a race for Bergen County Republican State Committeeman, the policy committee voted to support former Upper Saddle River Councilman Vincent Durante against the longtime incumbent, Benedict Focarino, 38-22.
If Gov. Phil Murphy signs legislation already passed by both houses of the legislature, State Committee members will be elected by a vote of the full county committee and no longer in a primary.
In the race to pick three county commissioner candidates, the policy committee voted to support Demarest Councilwoman Andrea Slowikowski (50), Second Amendment activist Jay Costa (44), and Mahwah school board member John Dinice (32) over Andrew Meehan, a math teacher and U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq (26), Linda Barba (13), and Armen Azarnia (9).
