An internal poll from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s gubernatorial campaign shows the mayor second among Democratic candidates, though a majority of the party’s primary voters were still undecided.
About 52% of likely Democratic primary voters said they were undecided on who to support in the June 10 primary. Among the six candidates, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) led with 15.8%, while Baraka was behind her at 10.1%.
New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller came third with 9.6%, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop received 5%, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) received 4.7%, and former Senate President Steve Sweeney received 2.7%.
The poll, conducted via text message Monday, has a margin of error of +/- 3%. MDW Communications, a Democratic political consulting firm, polled 789 likely primary voters. The New Jersey Globe reviewed the full survey.
Sherrill’s favorability ratings sat at 39% approval and 8% disapproval. For Baraka, 40%-8%; for Spiller, 30%-12%; for Fulop, 27%-10%; and for Gottheimer, 22%-12%. Sweeney was the only candidate underwater, with 17% approval and 26% disapproval.
The poll found the Democrats were least likely to recognize Fulop—40% of the respondents said they hadn’t heard of the mayor. About 37% said they haven’t heard of Gottheimer, 33% haven’t heard of Sherrill, 28% haven’t heard of Baraka, and 27% haven’t heard of Spiller or Sweeney.
The poll found junior Senator Andy Kim received similar approval ratings among Democrats as Senator Cory Booker and Gov. Phil Murphy. Kim was at 74% approval and 6% disapproval, Booker sat at 79%-11%, and Murphy was at 74%-13%.
The survey is the latest in a flurry of polls in the governor’s race, most of which show a majority of Democrats as undecided.
