Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill issued the following statement today on the departure of George Helmy as Gov. Phil Murphy’s chief of staff:
I want to congratulate my dear friend and colleague George Helmy on his remarkable tenure as Gov. Murphy’s Chief of Staff as he now prepares to embark on a new chapter in his career. The wise and expert counsel he provided the governor, his stewardship of his office, and his extraordinary service to the state of New Jersey cannot be overstated. I have known George probably longer than anyone in government, first meeting him when he was an intern in the office of Sen. Frank Lautenberg. I had the privilege of hiring George to join the Lautenberg team, and the pleasure of having him as an aide in the Essex County Commissioners office. I always knew that he was destined to do great things, and could not have been more thrilled when he agreed to join Gov. Murphy’s administration as Chief of Staff. It has always been very gratifying to watch the trajectory of his career, and I wish him the best of luck on all his future endeavors.
