Gov. Phil Murphy is fully onboard for the Biden-Harris ticket.
“Joe Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris reflects how far our society has come, and I have no doubt that she is the exact right person to step into this crucial leadership role at one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history,” the governor said Wednesday.
Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on Tuesday announced he would pick U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Cali.) as his running mate.
“Just like Vice President Biden, Senator Harris is ready to lead from day one and move our country forward,” Murphy said. “I know that with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s names at the top of the ticket, New Jersey and the rest of the country will be more energized than ever to elect Democrats up and down the ballot who will unite and make our country stronger and fairer than ever.”
So far, Harris has gotten a good reception from New Jersey’s Democrats, winning praise from top Democrats like Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Woodbridge), Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford) and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck), along with praise from the Democratic slice of the state’s congressional delegation.
Lawmakers’ praise aside, the Democratic ticket has a New Jersey connection.
“Both Jill Biden and Sen. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, have New Jersey roots. Dr. Biden was born in Hammonton, and Doug grew up in Matawan, so both halves of the Democratic ticket have New Jersey roots,” Murphy said. “Why should we be surprised by that? Every good story runs through the Garden State.”
