Gov. Phil Murphy has tested positive for Covid, the governor’s office announced today, marking the first confirmed time in the more than two-year-long pandemic that Murphy has contracted the virus.

“This afternoon, as part of a regularly-scheduled testing regime, Governor Murphy took a rapid antigen test that came back positive for COVID-19,” gubernatorial communications director Mahen Gunaratna said in a statement. “He subsequently took a PCR test, which also came back positive. He is currently asymptomatic and feeling well.”

Gunaratna also said that the governor, who is vaccinated and boosted, will cancel upcoming in-person events and self-isolate for the next five days.

While Murphy himself has never tested positive before, First Lady Tammy Murphy did in the midst of the massive Omicron wave that hit the state in December 2021 and January 2022. Murphy also had two earlier Covid scares, one in February 2021 when an unspecified family member tested positive, and another in October 2020 when two of his staffers contracted the virus.
