Update: on Friday, Sean Spiller filed with 8,011 signatures, and Jon Bramnick with 3,061. Sherrill increased her number to 6,267, and Sweeney to 7,155.
With 7,827 signatures – over 5,000 more than he needed — Rep. Josh Gottheimer became the fifth Democrat to file nominating petitions to run for governor.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka (10,806), Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop (7,517), Rep. Mikie Sherrill; (5,931), and former Senate President Steve Sweeney (7,120) have already filed.
Another Democrat, Sean Spiller, the New Jersey Education Association President and former Montclair mayor, has not yet filed petitions.
On the Republican side, only Jack Ciattarelli (5,119) has submitted petitions.
Candidates have until 4 PM on Monday, March 24 to file; the six candidates who have already delivered petitions can still add signatures between now and the deadline.
“I am so humbled by the overwhelming support from voters all across Jersey,” Gottheimer said. “I love this state—it’s in my roots and my bones—and I’m ready to take on and solve our toughest problems.”
Under a new law passed this year, candidates need 2,500 signatures – up from 1,000 – to qualify.
