Eight members of the U.S. House of Representatives today endorsed Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) for the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey next year, putting him in the lead on congressional endorsements.

Reps. Ed Case (D-Hawaii), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Susie Lee (D-Nevada), Kathy Manning (D-North Carolina), Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida), Jimmy Panetta (D-California), Tom Suozzi (D-New York), and Ritchie Torres (D-New York) are signing on in support of Gottheimer.

“I’m hugely honored to have earned endorsements from my colleagues in the House,” Gottheimer said. “I’m also proud to have built a strong record in Congress of making life more affordable for Jersey families. I’ll be the Lower Taxes, Lower Costs Governor, always working to protect our Jersey Values.”

Four House members have endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor: Jason Crow (D-Colorado), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pennsylvania), Abigail Spanberger (D-Virginia), and Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan).  Spanberger, a Red Bank native, is running for governor of Virginia next year; Slotkin was elected to the U.S. Senate last month.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has the most endorsements from the New Jersey delegation in the governor’s race: he has the backing of Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) and LaMonica McIver (D-Newark).  But former Senate President Steve Sweeney will tie that number next month.  Sweeney already has the backing of Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden), and his number will increase to two on January 3 when Rep.-elect Herb Conaway, Jr. (D-Delran), who endorsed Sweeney last year, takes office.
