Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton) raised $155,881 in the second quarter of this year and has brought in $415,269 during the first six months of 2019, reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show.
Smith, now in his 39th year as the congressman from New Jersey’s 4th district has $319,122 cash-on-hand.
Democrats thought they had a shot at beating Smith last year when Democrat Josh Welle raised $1.8 million, the often underestimated Smith raised $1.5 million and won by 12 percentage points.
After Smith, then 27-years-old, ousted thirteen-term incumbent Frank Thompson in 1980, the Almanac of American Politics said he would turn out to be “a one-term Congressman.” Now Smith is the lone Republican in the twelve-member New Jersey House delegation.
David Applefield, a former journalist who is seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Smith, has raised $73,741 – most of it from a $60,000 loan he made to his campaign. He has $55,978 in his campaign account.
Former Rep. Don Bonker, who represented Washington State in Congress from 1975 to 1989, contributed $1,000 to Applefield.
Applefield reported spending $15,000 on legal services with Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, a New York firm.
