Rockaway Township Republicans have nominated Michael Puzio, a councilman who has endorsed Democrat Mikie Sherrill for Congress, as their candidate in a November special election for mayor.

Puzio defeated former councilman Paul Minenna by two votes, 20-18.    He was nominated by former Morris County Clerk Joseph Bell.  Puzio will now run on the same ticket as Sherrill’s Republican opponent, Jay Webber.

The winner of the special election will fill the remaining fourteen months of the vacancy caused by the death of Mayor Michael Dachison.

The Township Council will meet on Thursday to pick an interim mayor.
