A top Republican state senator says that New Jersey Democratic leaders ought to be investigating 7,100 nursing home deaths and not President Donald Trump’s fundraiser last week in Bedminster.

Pennacchio today renewed his call for Senate Democrats to probe the handling of COVID inside New Jersey veterans and nursing homes following Gov. Phil Murphy’s announcement that his administration is looking at the Trump fundraiser.

“During the final days of the presidential election, Murphy wants to roll out his own version of an October Surprise,” said Senate Minority Whip Joseph Pennacchio. “What we really need is an investigation into the deadly operations in our long-term care residences.”

GOP senators have been calling for the nursing home investigation since May.

“By its silence, the Senate is allowing the lost lives of long-term care residents to be whitewashed, and the families who lost loved ones in nursing homes during the pandemic deserve better from us,” the Morris County senator said.  ““It is time to subpoena witnesses, ask the hard questions, and discover where things went wrong and how we lost so many lives.”

Just hours after he departed New Jersey last week, Trump tested positive for COVID.

Pennacchio, who did not attend the fundraiser, is the co-chairman of Trump’s New Jersey campaign.
