Update: 4th District Senate debate postponed until next week

Candidates for GOP State Senate nomination face off to pick Moriarty opponent

By New Jersey Globe Staff, May 02 2023 11:44 am

A debate between two Republican State Senate candidates in the 4th district set for tonight has been rescheduled until Monday, May 8 at 9 PM to accommodate a sudden illness from one of the moderators.

Gloucester County Commissioner Nick DeSilvio and former Washington Township Councilman Chris Del Borrello are seeking an open Senate seat in a newly-drawn district that includes parts of Gloucester, Camden, and Atlantic counties.

The debate is sponsored by the New Jersey Globe and Save Jersey.

The incumbent,  Fred Madden (D-Washington Township), is retiring after 20 years as a state senator.  Assemblyman Paul Moriarty (D-Washington Township) is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

The 4th district became more Republican in legislative redistricting.  Gov. Phil Murphy carried the old district by two percentage points, but under the new map, Republican Jack Ciattarelli won it by seven points.

David Wildstein, the editor of the New Jersey Globe, will moderate the debate, along with Matt Rooney, the editor of Save Jersey, a conservative news website.
