With Democratic Senate majority, Menendez will take global stage

New Jersey Democrat will chair U.S. Foreign Relations Committee

Bob Menendez is poised to become the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee following Democratic pickups of two U.S. Senate seats in Georgia runoff elections, positioning the New Jersey senator to play a hugely influential position in world affairs for at least the next two years.

The election of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock over two Republican incumbents gives each party 50 seats in the U.S. Senate.  That will give Democrats a majority after Kamala Harris becomes Vice President on January 20.

“The son of immigrants who grew up in a tenement building in Union City will soon lead one of the most powerful committees in the U.S. Senate,” said Michael Soliman, Menendez’s top political advisor.  “It‘s a source of pride for New Jersey and a reminder that America remains a land of opportunity.”

Menendez chaired the Foreign Relations panel in 2013 and 2014, before Republicans took control of the Senate.  He is currently the ranking minority member of the committee.
