Assemblyman Jay Webber, the Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district, says he’s not ready to back House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy for speaker until after the November election.
Soeaker Paul Ryan is not seeking re-election.
”I consider Majority Leader McCarthy my friend and a strong leader for the party,” Webber said. “To my knowledge he hasn’t announced formally that he’s seeking the speakership. There’s certainly speculation that he would and so discussions about leadership votes and decisions on our side of the aisle are better deferred until after November.”
Mikie Sherrill, the former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor who is Webber’s Democratic opponent, has already said she would not support Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for speaker if she wins.
On that, Webber and Sherrill are in complete agreement.
”I can unequivocally say I won’t vote to elect Nancy Pelosi as speaker,” Webber said.
I support Jay Webber for House Speaker but of the current potential candidates, my favorite is Jim Jordan of Ohio who is a staunch conservative.
