A nationally prominent Black congresswoman has endorsed Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark), the second Black congressman in New Jersey history, making it more difficult for a primary opponent to argue that the re-election of the incumbent was marginalizing Black women in favor of male candidates.

Rep. Val Demings (D-Florida) said that Payne has proven himself to be a true champion for working people in his district.”

“His commitment to public safety is unparalleled, having delivered millions of dollars to New Jersey municipalities to hire diverse police officers, purchase body cameras, and replace lead pipes,” Demings said.  “We need more people like Donald Payne in the House of Representatives and I am excited to endorse him for reelection.”

Demings is seeking the Democratic nomination to take on Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio in Florida.  She had served as the Orlando police chief before her election to Congress.

In March 2020, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), the only Black women to represent New Jersey in the House, had listed Demings as a potential running mate for Joe Biden.   Watson Coleman has endorsed Payne for re-election in New Jersey’s 10th district.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) had also touted Demings as a possible vice presidential candidate.

Payne faces Imani Oakley, a short-term staffer to a pair of New Jersey officials, and Essex County College professor Akil Khalfani, in the Democratic primary.

“Congresswoman Demings is a true fighter for her district and now the nation is learning what I’ve known since I met her — that she’s a leader and a star in our Democratic Party,” Payne said.  “Congresswoman Demings is an inspiration to so many and proof that our party has the ability to do what’s necessary to keep people safe while also fighting to ensure the equal treatment under the law that is necessary for the pursuit of social justice.”
