Tammy Murphy has won the endorsement of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 21 (IUPAT 21) in her bid to become the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey.
“Tammy Murphy has been a passionate supporter of New Jersey’s strong unions and shares the values of our dedicated women, men, and families,” the union’s business manager, Fran McLaughlin, said. “Long before running for U.S. Senate, Tammy made it a priority to partner with our union and include the painters and allied tradesmen of the IUPAT in large-scale projects across the state.”
In the race for Bob Menendez’s Senate seat – it remains unclear if this is an open seat or not – Murphy and her main rival, Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), have been competing for labor endorsements. Murphy has received the backing of the Eastern Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters; International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers Local 194; New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association; State Troopers Fraternal Association and the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers. The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) are backing Kim.
“Tammy understands the value and importance of bringing good-paying, family-sustaining union jobs to the state and has done so through her work to build New Jersey’s burgeoning clean energy and film industries,” said McLaughlin. “The IUPAT 21 is proud to endorse Tammy Murphy for U.S. Senate and we are confident that she will be a steadfast partner in the fight for safe working conditions and fair wages.”
Murphy said that IUPAT 21 “have been incredible partners and I have enjoyed working with them on critical projects.”
“Our country’s unions and the women and men of labor are the heart of a strong middle class and robust economy,” she said. “I promise to be a tenacious fighter for our union partners and am committed to expanding opportunities for apprenticeships and training, while advocating for higher wages and better work environments.”
