State Troopers union backs Tammy Murphy for Senate

Troopers have been tasked with protecting Murphy during her time as First Lady

The State Troopers Fraternal Association (SFTA), a union representing more than 1,900 New Jersey State Troopers, has endorsed First Lady Tammy Murphy for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate.

As the First Lady, Murphy has had more direct interactions with State Troopers than most politicians; the State Police are officially tasked with protecting Murphy and her husband, Gov. Phil Murphy, as well as other top state leaders. In its endorsement letter, the SFTA said that through that close relationship, Murphy has shown her commitment to the wellbeing of State Troopers.

“As we have gotten to know each other over the years, we have recognized you as a tremendous advocate for so many great causes across our state including enhancing economic opportunities through your New Start New Jersey advocacy group,” the SFTA political action committee said in a statement addressed to Murphy. “We have been honored to have your steadfast support and sympathy during our most trying times.”

The endorsement comes in spite of a dispute between Murphy and four female State Troopers who have alleged in a lawsuit that Murphy refused to allow a trooper to pump breast milk during her breaks. Murphy has denied the allegation, with a spokesperson saying in May 2023 that “any characterization that the first lady would not be completely supportive and accommodating of breastfeeding, pumping or any needs of a new mother in the workplace is outrageous and categorically false.”

Along with Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), Murphy is one of the two top Democratic candidates for the Senate seat currently held by indicted Senator Bob Menendez. Both Murphy and Kim have attracted some major labor backers; Murphy has gotten endorsements from New Jersey’s biggest carpenters’ and firefighters’ unions, while Kim has the support of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
