Two Republican officials asked to meet Dem House candidate

There is some speculation this morning that a Republican councilman from Rockaway will endorse Mikie Sherrill for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district.

Councilman Michael Puzio met Sherill this morning at a diner in Rockaway, along with Rockaway Township Democratic Municipal Chairman Douglas Romaine and Democratic councilman Jonathan Sackett.

Reached on his cell phone, Puzio declined comment and hung up.

Romaine confirmed the meeting, telling the New Jersey Globe that Puzio and another Republican councilman, Jack Quinn, asked to meet with Sherill, the Democratic candidate for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.

“News to follow,” Romaine said.

Republicans control local government in Rockaway, but the GOP is divided into two factions.  One group of Rockaway Republicans are backing Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) for the congressional seat.

There has been talk that a group of Rockaway Republican elected officials could switch parties next year, when several local officials are seeking re-election.  Romaine declined to comment on that.

  1. So Tucker Kelley went into a diner and took a photo. That in itself is strange. I like my representation to be unbiased and I also like the Township I live in not to be a You Tube joke, next to Tide Pods and dancing pets. This is petty and foolish. Every candidate should be considered and I am also a Republican and expect that my elected officials carefully consider lending their support simply as a member of a political party. A little right wing for my taste.
