Incoming Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark) has declined to rule out a bid for retiring Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York)’s congressional seat, though she said it’s still too early to say anything more definitive.
“I never say never to anything, but I don’t even think that [Sires] not running is official quite yet, so I wouldn’t comment on it until it’s super official,” Ruiz said.
The New Jersey Globe broke the news of Sires’ pending retirement last night; Rob Menendez, a Port Authority commissioner and the son of U.S. Sen Robert Menendez quickly emerged as the frontrunner to replace him, and has since secured a number of notable endorsements in the district.
