Payne headed to another term in Congress

Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) will win another term in the House of Representatives, the New Jersey Globe projects.

He will defeat Republican challenger Jennifer Zinone, a Bayonne Community leader running as a conservative in a district where Democrats typically win with at least 80% of the vote.

The new term will be the congressman’s fifth full term in the chamber. He was first elected in November 2012 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of his father, Rep. Donald Payne, Sr. (D-Newark).

Payne has garnered some small amount of power in Congress, winning chairmanship of the Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications Subcommittee after Democrats took back control of the House in 2018.
