Palatucci kept in the dark until Becchi deal was done, sources say

Republican National Committeeman didn’t hear about plan until Sunday afternoon

Republican National Committeeman Bill Palatucci has told several GOP leaders that he will support Rosemary Becchi for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district, several sources speaking on the condition of anonymity our of fear of retaliation told the New Jersey Globe.

Palatucci has made his pick even though the candidate he helped recruit, former Kinnelon councilman Larry Casha, has not formally announced with his withdrawal from the race.

The same sources told the Globe that Palatucci was not involved in any of the negotiations to convince Becchi to drop her challenge to Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in the 7th district and instead take on Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) in the 11th.

Palatucci was not informed of the plans until after the deal was completed earlier this afternoon.  Numerous Republican leaders said that was deliberate so that he did not attempt to dismantle a move that had already been completed.

More than a dozen top Republican officials were actively involved throughout the weekend in convincing Becchi to switch districts, a process that the Globe has learned began on Friday.

“Welcome to the party.  We’ve been here all weekend,” one Republican leader told Globe.
