Morristown mayor backs Tammy Murphy for Senate

‘Tammy Murphy is the ideal candidate for this moment,’ Dougherty says

At a holiday event last night, Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty “wholeheartedly” endorsed First Lady Tammy Murphy for the United States Senate.

“Tammy is an extraordinarily accomplished woman who shares our ideals and values and will work hard for working families and the children of our state,” Dougherty said of Murphy, who was in attendance at the event. “Tammy is the best choice to diversify our congressional delegation in Washington and she offers us a lifetime record of experience, both domestically and abroad.”

“Tammy Murphy is the ideal candidate for this moment and as the proud mayor of this wonderful municipality, I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy,” he continued.

As the mayor of Morristown since 2010, Dougherty leads the county seat and symbolic heart of Morris County. His endorsement likely gives Murphy a boost in the fight for the Morris Democratic organizational line against Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), Murphy’s main intra-party opponent.

Murphy also has the endorsement of Morristown’s congresswoman, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), as well as five other members of the state’s congressional delegation.

The incumbent, Senator Bob Menendez, is under federal indictment and has faced widespread calls to resign. If Menendez chooses to run for re-election next year, he will do so with almost no institutional support anywhere in the state.
