Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) today endorsed First Lady Tammy Murphy for the U.S. Senate, becoming the first member of the state’s congressional delegation to take sides in next year’s Democratic primary.
“I am proud to endorse my good friend, Tammy Murphy, as the next United States Senator from New Jersey,” Gottheimer said. “Tammy has been an unrelenting advocate and fighter, on the ground in communities across our great state, always protecting our Jersey Values — whether that’s on choice and maternal health or public safety and the environment.”
Murphy announced her bid for the Senate on Wednesday in a race that may or may not include the incumbent, indicted U.S. Senator Bob Menendez. One of Gottheimer’s House colleagues, Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), entered the Senate race on September 23.
Gottheimer’s support follows an announcement by Bergen County Democratic Chairman Paul Juliano that he was endorsing Murphy. That makes the First Lady the favorite to secure the organization line in Bergen County
“I’m eager to help Tammy, President Biden, and commonsense Democrats win big in 2024,” said Gottheimer, a four-term congressman and a likely candidate for governor in 2025 when Gov. Phil Murphy is term-limited.
