An influential Black minister has endorsed Tammy Murphy for the U.S. Senate.
Rev. Ronald Slaughter, the pastor of Saint James AME Church in Newark, which draws nearly 2,000 parishioners each Sunday, said that Murphy “will make New Jersey proud as our state’s first woman senator.”
“I am proud to support First Lady Tammy Murphy’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate. She is a woman of integrity who will be an effective advocate for all of New Jersey’s residents,” Slaughter said. “Her work as First Lady to reduce the maternal and infant mortality epidemic in New Jersey and ensure equitable care for women and children of all races and ethnicities, especially Black women, speaks volumes about her concern for our state’s underserved residents.”
Slaughter was named vice president of the New Jersey Parole Board by Gov. Phil Murphy.
Murphy faces Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), former Newark school board member and civil rights leader Larry Hamm – and possible Menendez and Latina activist Patricia Campos Medina – in the Democratic primary.
