Mehta drops controversial local news site, editor from defamation suit

Former GOP Senate candidate still suing one-time rival for defamation

Former Republican Senate candidate Rik Mehta dropped a controversial local news site and its editor from a suit claiming they and a former rival conspired in violation of campaign finance laws.

“There was no reason for myself or Shore News Network to be involved in a claim between two candidates who are at apparent odds with each other,” said Phil Stilton, editor of the Shore News Network. “I want to thank Mr. Mehta for his attention in the matter and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

In the 2020 election cycle, the site published numerous stories attacking Mehta, calling him a racist Democrat opioid salesman. Mehta’s suit claims those stories are libelous and says they harmed him in the general election against U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-Newark).

The amended complaint still accuses Singh and his campaign of defamation and false light.
