Former Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) has signed on as a senior policy consultant to a small boutique law firm specializing in international financial disputes and global commercial litigation.
The firm, Lewis Baach Kaufmann Middlemiss, looks like a good fit for Malinowski, a former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State, House Foreign Affairs Committee vice chairman, and longtime human rights expert.
Malinowski’s decision to join a private law firm hints that the former two-term congressman is no longer in the mix to succeed Wendy Sherman as the Deputy U.S. Secretary of State. Sherman retired at the end of June, and Malinowski was on some short lists for that post.
He represented New Jersey’s 7th district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. He announced in May that he wouldn’t seek a rematch next year with the Republican who unseated him by three points, Rep. Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield).
The firm, which has offices in New York, Washington, and London, has carved a niche market in areas like U.S. sanctions, international asset tracing and investigation, international insolvency, Latin America, and the Middle East. Some of Lewis Baach’s clients include Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Arab Bank, Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Sonid Group of Egypt, and the World Bank.
Employees of Lewis Baach contributed nearly $28,000 to Malinowski’s campaigns for Congress in 2018, 2020, and 2022.
Since leaving Congress earlier this year, Malinowski joined the board of directors of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the McCain Institute as a senior fellow. He also founded Democracy for Districts, a grassroots organization seeking to combat the surge of social conservatives winning local school board seats in New Jersey.
